,
founded in 1988, is a non-profit, member supported organization dedicated
to promoting the arts. Each year, the school hosts a diverse range
of classes, reflecting the rich heritage of arts within the community.
Although traditional Scandinavian Folk Arts have been the foundation
of the school, classes are also offered in the fabric, book, silver
and other various mediums.
Two of the current classes are Shibori Weekend and Pampering on the Prairie. See the descriptions below and plan to stay at Aslak and Annies while taking the classes.
Shibori Weekend
Bring your friends for a weekend of art and entertainment. Drive to Milan Friday evening and get settled in for the weekend with evening tea as you relax together. You will be staying at Karen Jenson's Trestuen Gallery and Nancy Strand's Aslak & Annie's Bed & Breakfast.
On Saturday morning, you will enjoy a homemade local, seasonal fare breakfast before heading off to the Milan Village Arts School for your Shibori class taught by our locally grown Martha Alvarado. Shibori is a Japanese fabric dyeing technique, and one of the students in last years class said, "I haven't had this much fun since I was a kid!". You will be making a table runner and napkins. (See the supply list below.) You will be delivered a picnic lunch prepared by Bergen's Prairie Market.
After class on Saturday, you will enjoy a gourmet-style meal prepared by Nancy at her B&B before you drive to Dawson for an evening of entertainment. Relax with tea before bed. Awake on Sunday to breakfast, finish your Shibori project, and enjoy another picnic lunch before you leave town. And thanks for stopping by!

Lac qui
Parle is a French translation of the name given to the lake by the
Dakota Indians who called it the "lake that speaks." If
you visit in the spring or fall you'll understand why. The lake is
a stop over for thousands of migratory Canada geese and other waterfowl.
You'll hear a chorus of honking, quacking, and other vocalizations.
Paddle the lake, or cast a line and catch walleye, northerns, perch,
or crappie. Explore one of the trails by foot or horseback. Visit
the historic Fort Renville and Lac qui Parle mission sites. While
in the area, be sure to visit the 27,000 acre Lac qui Parle Wildlife
Management Area.
There are also opportunities for hiking, biking,
cross country skiing, fishing, hunting, watching nature, and bird
watching.
